The National People’s Power (NPP) and Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) secured key leadership positions in recent Local Government (LG) elections.
Nimal Karunathilaka of the NPP was elected Chairman of the Ukuwela Pradeshiya Sabha in Rattota, Matale, despite his party holding only 11 of the 27 seats. He won with 14 votes amid tense proceedings. Meera Saibu Mohamed Rafi of the United National Alliance was elected Vice Chairman.
In Trincomalee, M. G. J. Thushara Sampath (NPP) was elected Chairman of the Seruwila Pradeshiya Sabha, while Sarvajana Balaya’s K. G. Dimuthu Priyankara was named Vice Chairman.
Accordingly, in Beruwala, SJB’s Mohamed Naizer Mohamed Faizan defeated NPP’s W. K. Nilantha Surith Dias to become Chairman, receiving 22 votes at the inaugural meeting chaired by Commissioner Sarangika Kalhari Jayasundara.
