The Supreme Court (SC) upheld the death sentence for former Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Vass Gunawardena and 4 others, who were convicted for the 2013 abduction and murder of businessman Mohammed Siyam.

Despite concerns raised by the defense regarding the sentence's enforcement date, Judge Aditya Patabendige clarified that the timing of the death sentence's implementation falls under the SC's jurisdiction and cannot be decided by the HC.
