Benefits of hair oils and how to use them

02 Mar 2025 | By Ama Saumyadeepa Dias

Hair oils have been essential in hair care for centuries, offering nourishing, repairing, and protective qualities. With the increasing demand for natural and chemical-free options, hair oils have become a popular choice.

Let’s explore the benefits of hair oils and how to use them effectively.

Benefits of hair oils

  • Moisturisation and hydration: Hair oils, rich in fatty acids, vitamins, and minerals, hydrate and moisturise the hair. They penetrate the hair shaft, keeping it soft, manageable, and nourished. Coconut, argan, and olive oil are commonly used to lock in moisture and restore shine, preventing dryness.
  • Strengthening hair: Oils such as castor oil, high in ricinoleic acid, strengthen hair and improve elasticity, helping to prevent breakage. Jojoba oil, resembling natural scalp oils, restores balance and promotes healthy hair growth.
  • Reducing hair fall: Hair oils nourish the scalp and improve circulation, which helps reduce hair fall. Essential oils such as rosemary and peppermint oil, when combined with carrier oils like coconut or olive oil, stimulate follicles, promoting growth and strengthening roots.
  • Improving scalp health: A healthy scalp is vital for healthy hair. Tea tree and neem oil have antimicrobial properties that combat dandruff, soothe itching, and reduce irritation. Regular oiling keeps the scalp moisturised and prevents dryness.
  • Enhancing hair growth: Hair oils like castor, argan, and rosemary oil stimulate growth by nourishing the scalp and boosting circulation. The massaging action also encourages blood flow to hair follicles, encouraging thicker and longer hair.
  • Adding shine and luster: Hair oils smooth the hair cuticle, reflecting light and adding shine. Argan oil is especially known for imparting shine without making hair greasy, reducing frizz, and creating a sleek and polished look.
  • Protecting from heat damage: Hair oils protect against heat damage from styling tools. Coconut, argan, and macadamia oils help prevent moisture loss and shield hair. However, these should be used sparingly to avoid weighing hair down.

How to use hair oils correctly

To maximise the benefits of hair oils, follow these tips:

  1. Choose the right oil: For dry hair, use heavier oils like coconut or olive oil. For oily or fine hair, lighter oils like argan, jojoba, or grapeseed oil are best.
  2. Pre-shampoo treatment: Apply oil to the scalp and hair before washing. Massage gently to stimulate circulation, leaving it on for 30 minutes or overnight. Wash and condition as usual.
  3. Scalp massage: Massage oil into the scalp for 5-10 minutes to promote blood flow and ensure even distribution. This helps stimulate healthy hair growth.
  4. Post-wash conditioning: Apply a small amount of oil to damp hair after washing, focusing on the ends to prevent dryness and split ends. Avoid applying oil to the roots to prevent greasiness.
  5. Leave-in treatment: For added shine and frizz control, apply a small amount of oil to damp hair and let it air dry or style as usual.
  6. Avoid overuse: Use a small amount of oil to avoid greasy hair. Adjust as needed to suit your hair type.

Healthier hair

Hair oils provide many benefits, including hydration, strength, reduced hair fall, and shine. They also protect from heat damage and promote a healthy scalp.

By selecting the right oil and following proper techniques, you can achieve healthier, shinier, and more manageable hair. Regular use of hair oils, combined with a balanced routine, leads to long-term improvements in hair health and appearance.
