In an exhilarating Pool E match at the Netball World Cup 2023 in Cape Town, South Africa, Sri Lanka showcased remarkable resilience by overcoming a challenging third quarter and erasing a seven-goal deficit to triumph over Barbados with a score of 60-56.
Barbados took an early lead of 2-0, but Sri Lanka swiftly turned the tide, pushing the score to 3-2 in their favour. Midway through the quarter, Barbados launched a series of successful attacks, managing to pull ahead 8-6. As the quarter drew to a close, Sri Lanka made a strong comeback, levelling the score at an impressive 15-15.
The second quarter saw Sri Lanka elevating their game, capitalising on turnovers from Barbados. A rapid 5-0 surge within three minutes propelled Sri Lanka to a commanding 21-16 lead, which later expanded to a seven-point advantage at 24-17. Nonetheless, Barbados fought back and narrowed the margin to just four points by halftime, with the scoreboard showing 30-26 (15-11) in favour of Sri Lanka.
However, the third quarter proved to be challenging for Sri Lanka as Barbados intensified their efforts. Barbados executed consecutive 3-0 and 5-0 runs, allowing them to seize a 39-36 lead by the eighth minute. They continued their strong performance, finishing the quarter with a five-goal lead at 48-43 (22-13). Sri Lanka’s shooting accuracy remained impeccable at 13 out of 13, but Barbados managed a higher number of attempts at 23.
Similar to their previous game, Head Coach Thilaka Jinadasa made a strategic decision by replacing Semini Alwis with Malmi Hettiarachchi at centre during the last quarter. This move also involved promoting Gayanjali Amarawansa to Wing-Attack and Dulangi Wannithilake to Goal Attack. This tactical adjustment yielded impressive results as Sri Lanka rallied once again. Despite Barbados briefly extending their lead to 50-43, Sri Lanka embarked on a remarkable 5-0 run, equalizing the score at 50-50. Barbados responded by regaining a 54-50 lead, but Sri Lanka's tenacity shone through in the final moments. Exploiting Barbados’ turnovers, Sri Lanka managed a series of 2-0 and 3-0 runs, ultimately levelling the score at 55-55. A decisive 4-0 surge solidified Sri Lanka's comeback, securing a triumphant 60-56 victory (17-8) that left their fans in awe.
Thishala Algama, playing as Goal Shooter, delivered a stellar performance, sinking an impressive 47 out of 50 attempts (94%). Semini Alwis and Wannithilake were equally flawless, achieving perfect scores of 9/9 and 4/4, respectively. Barbados’ Latonia Blackman notched 29 out of 35 attempts (82.9%), while Kadeen Corbin, who had previously represented England, secured 27 out of 31 attempts (87.1%). The standout player of the match was undoubtedly Dulangi Wannithilake, recognised for her game-changing contributions that propelled Sri Lanka to a remarkable victory.
