El Niño: Impact on India could affect SL imports

17 Jun 2026 | BY Dilanthi Jayamanne

A possible impact of the El Niño climate phenomenon on India could have consequences on the island’s economy and certain imports, Cabinet Spokesperson Dr Nalinda Jayatissa observed.

Speaking to the media at the weekly Cabinet briefing, Dr Jayatissa said yesterday (16) that the Government is closely monitoring developments related to the climate phenomenon and is preparing to face possible impacts. He said that while Sri Lanka could also be affected, countries such as India are expected to face a greater impact from the climate phenomenon. "Any impact on India could also have an effect on Sri Lanka," he pointed out.

Dr Jayatissa said that scientists at the Meteorology Department are continuously monitoring the situation, while the Government is paying special attention to possible effects on agriculture, food production, water resources and other sectors. He said that discussions had already been held with the participation of the President, while Ministers are also looking at possible situations that could arise during next month (July) and August and during the first few months of next year (2027). According to Dr Jayatissa, preparations are underway to identify measures that could be taken in advance, including steps to minimise possible challenges during the next cultivation season as well. He said that future plans are being prepared based on assessments provided by Sri Lankan meteorologists, while several forecasting models are also being considered.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Dr Harini Amarasuriya has stated that special attention should be directed towards food security, water management, and energy management in preparation for the anticipated impacts of El Niño.

The Premier made these remarks while attending the Colombo District Coordinating Committee meeting held yesterday (16).

She further noted the importance of conducting awareness programmes on energy conservation and the efficient use.

Commenting on the programme to improve accessibility for persons with disabilities implemented under the Prajashakthi Programme, she stated that special attention should also be given to strengthening services such as day-care centres and vocational training programmes for persons with disabilities, and community-based activities for older persons.
