  • A hidden gem beneath the heart of Sri Lanka

Imagine venturing deep into the heart of Sri Lanka, where ancient history intertwines with nature’s grandeur. Our destination? Nil Diya Pokuna, an enchanting underground lake hidden within the labyrinthine caves in Ella. It’s a place where time seems to stand still, offering an unforgettable glimpse into a subterranean world of wonder and mystery.

Before embarking on this extraordinary adventure, we purchased tickets at the entrance for Rs. 500 a piece. Each ticket includes an assigned guide who equips visitors with the necessary gear. Our guide, both knowledgeable and friendly, ensured we were well-prepared for the descent. We were given a little headlamp with a torch as well – big lights aren’t allowed, as they can scare and disrupt the cave’s resident bats and other wildlife.

The descent

The descent into Nil Diya Pokuna began with a small ladder, marking the entrance into the cave’s depths. For those who are claustrophobic, the journey might be challenging, but our guide assured us that people of any fitness level should be able to manage it. His encouraging presence and frequent breaks made the experience more enjoyable and less daunting.

As we descended further, the air grew cooler and the sounds from the surface faded away, replaced by the echoing drip of water and the rustle of unseen creatures. The path, while well-trodden, required careful navigation, illuminated only by the soft glow of our headlamps. Each step took us further back in time, through layers of history that have remained undisturbed for centuries.

An underground marvel

Reaching the underground lake felt like stepping into another realm. Nil Diya Pokuna, which translates to Blue Water Pond, lived up to its name. The water was an otherworldly shade of blue, so clear that we could see the smooth stones lining the bottom even from the edge. This pristine clarity is a result of the natural filtration process through the limestone rock, lending the lake its ethereal quality.

The cave walls were adorned with stunning formations created by decades of dripping water. These natural sculptures, resembling abstract art, added to the cave’s otherworldly beauty. The floors, rich with minerals, sparkled and shone, making each step a mesmerising experience.

A spiritual reflection

Exploring Nil Diya Pokuna was not just an adventure into the physical realm but also a journey into the spiritual. The cave has long been a place of meditation and reflection. The serene environment and the isolation from the outside world provide a perfect setting for introspection. It’s easy to see why ancient monks and mystics were drawn to this place, seeking enlightenment and peace in its depths.

As we sat by the lake, the guide encouraged us to embrace the stillness and listen to the whispers of history. The experience was meditative, a reminder of the profound connection between humanity and nature, and the importance of preserving such sacred spaces for future generations.

The return journey

The trek back up, though challenging, was made manageable by our guide’s encouragement and the sense of accomplishment we felt. The ladders, which initially seemed rickety, proved to be sturdier than they appeared. Along the way, our guide shared fascinating rumours about undiscovered parts of the cave potentially leading to other cities in Sri Lanka and stories about King Ravana’s legendary use of the caves. These tales added an element of mystery and intrigue to our journey.

Nil Diya Pokuna offers a unique blend of adventure, history, and natural beauty. It’s a destination that invites exploration and rewards the curious with unparalleled experiences. Whether you’re a history buff, a nature enthusiast, or a spiritual seeker, this underground marvel promises to leave you with memories that linger long after you’ve resurfaced.

As we emerged from the cave, blinking in the bright daylight, there was a collective sense of awe among our group. We had journeyed through time and space, delving into the depths of Sri Lanka’s rich heritage and natural beauty. Nil Diya Pokuna had revealed its secrets to us, leaving an indelible mark on our hearts and minds. Right as you ascend, there is an aunty waiting for you, selling fresh spiced lemonade, heavy on the ice. After such a warm and sweaty trek, this little sweet pick-me-up was a welcoming sight.

In a world where many wonders are easily accessible, Nil Diya Pokuna stands out as a hidden gem. It beckons the adventurous spirit, promising a journey into the unknown and the unforgettable. If you ever find yourself in the area, dare to step off the beaten path and descend into the magical depths of Nil Diya Pokuna. It’s an experience you’ll cherish forever.

Practical tips for future explorers

Visiting Nil Diya Pokuna requires some preparation, both mentally and physically. Here are a few tips to ensure a safe and enjoyable adventure:

 1. Guided tours: Always explore the cave with a knowledgeable guide. The paths can be treacherous, and a guide will not only ensure your safety but also enrich your experience with historical and geological insights.

2. Appropriate gear: Wear sturdy, comfortable shoes with good grip. The cave floors can be slippery. Carry a reliable headlamp and a spare flashlight. The darkness is absolute, and proper lighting is essential.

3. Fitness level: The descent and ascent can be physically demanding. Ensure you’re in good health and capable of handling steep, uneven terrain.

4. Respect the environment: Nil Diya Pokuna is a delicate ecosystem. Avoid touching the formations or disturbing the wildlife. Carry out all trash and be mindful of your impact.

5. Clothing and gear: It’s advised to wear your swimsuit under very light clothing, as it gets hot inside the cave. A small bag is best for carrying a towel and a simple change of clothes. You will be wet on the climb back up, so be prepared for slippery conditions.

6. Swimming tips: The water is cold and refreshing, and swimming in it feels almost like a spiritual cleanse. However, as the water runs deep, stay within sight of your guide and avoid wandering off.
