Minister of Public Security Ananda Wijepala stated that 480 motorists have been arrested for driving under the influence of drugs in the first 22 days of 2026.

He noted that 135 road accidents occurred during this period, causing 15 driver and 50 pedestrian deaths.

Minister Wijepala emphasized that all drug-driving offenders will be prosecuted and that police have been instructed to enforce the law equally.

He added that monitoring of SLTB employees and stricter oversight of bus operators are ongoing, and raids to check drivers continue.
