Today, in the spotlight of The Sunday Morning Little Stars, we feature Randiw Sajendra, the talented young artist behind our Avurudu-themed cover.
Randiw is a 16-year-old student from Lumbini College, Colombo who has achieved numerous awards over the past two years. In 2025, he emerged as one of the top 10 Merit award winners at the State Children’s Art Festival.
Can you tell us about yourself?
My name is K. Randiw Sajendra, and I am 16 years old. I am an only child, and I live with my family in Polgasowita.
I am studying at Lumbini College, Colombo at the moment, whereas I completed my primary education at Batuwandara Junior College.
I successfully passed the Grade 5 Scholarship Examination and joined Lumbini College in Grade 6. Recently, I completed my Ordinary Level examinations and am currently awaiting my results.
During my school years, I was actively involved in cricket, but I paused sports to focus on my studies. At present, I dedicate my time mainly to art and academic activities.
When did your journey in art begin?
My interest in art started at a very young age, as I have been drawing for as long as I can remember. I began participating in art competitions in Grade 6.
My parents always encouraged me by saying that I had a natural talent, and over time, I realised my passion for art. From then on, I became more committed and started winning many of the competitions I entered.
What is the first competition you remember winning?
The first competition I clearly remember winning was when I was in Grade 8. It was organised by Brown & Company, and that victory was a significant milestone that boosted my confidence and motivated me to continue.
What is your most prestigious achievement in art so far?
One of my most prestigious achievements was receiving a Merit certificate at the 2025 State Children’s Art Festival, where I was selected among the top 10 Merit award winners.
In addition to that, I have secured many first-place awards in both State and private-sector competitions. Altogether, I have won over 50 competitions, including nine Gold medals, four Silver medals, and one Bronze medal.
What subjects or themes do you prefer in your artwork?
I focus mainly on drawing human figures and animals. However, I do not limit myself to a specific subject. I prefer to explore different themes depending on what best suits my artistic style and the message I want to convey.
What is your preferred medium, and how has it evolved?
I initially started drawing using pastels, which helped me build a foundation in colour and shading.
Later, I trained in watercolour techniques and have continued working with watercolours ever since. I enjoy using them because they offer greater freedom and flexibility, allowing me to express my creativity more effectively.
Have you received any formal training in art?
For the most part, I am self-taught. I have learnt by experimenting and improving through my own mistakes.
However, for about two years before my Ordinary Level exams, I received personal coaching, which helped refine my skills.
I have also developed my own techniques, and I believe that is one of the key reasons why my artwork stands out.
What are your future ambitions?
My ambition is to become a professional artist. I hope to continue developing my skills and eventually build a successful career in the art field.
As a student, what challenges do you think artists face in Sri Lanka?
I believe that art does not receive the level of recognition it deserves in Sri Lanka compared to international standards. There is a much larger market and greater appreciation for art globally.
Art has strong potential as a revenue-generating field, but locally, it lacks sufficient attention and support. Similar to sports, if more emphasis and opportunities were given to art, many talented students could succeed.
There are many young artists like me at the school level who lack proper opportunities. One of the challenges I personally faced was competing with older participants, but I managed to overcome that through skill and determination.
What advice would you give to young aspiring artists?
I would encourage young artists to develop their own unique techniques rather than simply copying others. It is important to understand and recognise your own skills and strengths.
With dedication and practice, they can build their own artistic identity.
Is there anyone you would like to thank?
I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude to my parents for their continuous support and encouragement.
I am also thankful to my teachers and mentors: Asanga Ladduwahetti Sir, Chathura Gnanawickrama Sir, Veena Beauty Miss, Anuradha Rajapaksa Miss, T.P.N. Tharanga Sir, Principal Geetha Priyadarshani Madam, Deputy Principal Dhammika Ranatungage Sir, and former Deputy Principal Priyantha Karunaratne Sir.
In addition, I would like to thank Harsha Damian Sir, who gave me my foundational knowledge in art, Dayawansa Kumarasaru Sir, former Principal of Batuwandara Junior College Ruwan Arambepola Sir, and Sisara Gunathilaka Miss for their guidance and support throughout my journey.
