The Department of Motor Traffic (DMT) has stated that standard registration number plates for new vehicles will be issued from the end of May 2026.

The announcement was made during a meeting of the Committee on Public Finance (CoPF).

The department also noted that a new system will be introduced to allow vehicle owners to obtain personalised number plates displaying their names.

CoPF Chairman MP Harsha de Silva noted that provincial identifiers have been removed from current plates.

The DMT said such identifiers were previously introduced for security reasons during the conflict period but were later discontinued due to technical limitations.
