Health authorities warn of rapid spread of skin infection across Sri Lanka

16 Jul 2025 | BY Staff Writer

Sri Lankan health officials have raised the alarm over a surge in Tinea, a fungal skin infection commonly known as ringworm, spreading rapidly across the country. Consultant Dermatologist Dr. Janaka Akarawita noted a sharp rise in cases, with nearly 20% of dermatology clinic patients now diagnosed with the condition.

Tinea affects the skin, scalp, nails, and even the face, and spreads easily through direct contact or shared items like clothing and towels. It typically appears as ring-shaped rashes and causes intense itching, especially in moist areas of the body.

Compared to a decade ago when cases were rare and mild, the infection is now far more aggressive and widespread. Dr. Akarawita also warned that many patients are showing poor response to treatments, adding pressure on the healthcare system.

The public is urged to practice good hygiene, avoid sharing personal items, and seek medical help promptly to curb the spread of the infection.
