Ride-hailing and delivery platform Uber has completed the onshoring of its Sri Lankan business, transitioning its local operations to Uber Lanka (Private) Limited, amidst the recent debate around the proposed digital tax framework and the need for a level playing field between locally incorporated businesses and foreign digital platforms.

This development was shared by Uber with The Daily Morning, whereby the company ensured that it is now at par with other locally incorporated businesses operating in the island nation.

Industry experts believe that this is a signal by Uber to further deepen its presence in the market, where it has continued to invest in expanding both its mobility and delivery services since entering this market in 2015. 

In an official statement Uber spokesperson said: “Sri Lanka holds a lot of promise and continues to be a key market for Uber in the region. Onshoring our business further reinforces our long-term commitment to the country and our confidence in its future. As we continue expanding to more cities and serve more communities, this provides a stronger foundation for our growth and impact in the island nation.”

This year, Uber Rides expanded to Kegalle, Uber Eats launched in Nuwara Eliya, and both services were introduced in Ratnapura, reaching more communities across Sri Lanka.

Uber said the transition to a local entity strengthens its position by aligning operations with local practices and supporting long-term growth. It also reinforces the company’s commitment to local stakeholders as it expands its mobility and delivery services.

Uber remains focused on offering consumers greater choice and convenience, creating more earning opportunities for drivers and couriers, and supporting local businesses through its platform.
