Over 50 lightning related deaths reported annually in Sri Lanka

Director of the Astronomy and Space Science Unit at the University of Colombo, Professor Chandana Jayaratne, says more than 50 people die annually in Sri Lanka due to lightning strikes.


He stated that many others suffer injuries due to inadequate attention to lightning protection systems.


Prof. Jayaratne added that steps have been taken to establish a National Lightning Protection Centre to address the issue.
