  • CID to submit report on ‘illegal, unlawful, unruly assembly’

The suspect who was arrested for allegedly injuring a Police officer during a protest held near the Colombo Fort Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday (26), has been remanded yesterday (28).

The arrest was made in Kalutara by a team of officers from the Colombo Crime Division in connection with the incident, in which a Police officer on duty was reportedly injured by a thrown bottle. The suspect is accused of causing injuries and obstructing Police duties.

Police stated that the suspect was arrested on Wednesday (27) and handed over to the Kompannavidiya Police. The arrested individual is a 52-year-old former Municipal Councilor from Nagoda, Kalutara.

Meanwhile, the Court has ordered the Police to investigate and submit a report regarding the unlawful assembly and the individuals who had behaved in an unruly manner near the Court premises on Tuesday shortly before the hearing of the case filed against former President Ranil Wickremesinghe over the alleged misuse of State funds. Police Media Spokesperson, Assistant Superintendent of Police F.U. Wootler revealed this at a press conference held on Wednesday.

“The Court itself gave a clear order to conduct an investigation into the illegal and unlawful assembly and to report to the Court the next day. Accordingly, the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) is scheduled to submit a report to the Court on this matter in the future,” he said.
