Two wild elephants have died after being electrocuted in the Okkampitiya area of Buttala, wildlife officials said.

Authorities suspect the elephants came into contact with an illegally connected electric wire linked to a sugarcane cultivation plot.

The deceased animals are believed to be around one year old and 20 years old. A suspect has been arrested in connection with the incident.

A post-mortem examination of the carcasses is scheduled to be conducted today, while further investigations are being carried out jointly by the Okkampitiya Police and the Monaragala Wildlife Office.
