Prime Minister (PM) Harini Amarasuriya emphasised that true freedom has historically been limited to a privileged few, and that the government’s goal is to create equal opportunities for all citizens to experience and enjoy that freedom. 

She made these remarks on March 15 during the inauguration of the multi-purpose development project at the Angunakolapelessa Tank, part of the “Pohosath Gamak” programme by the Ministry of Rural Development, Social Security and Community Empowerment.

Alongside the main project, a boating facility and a cafeteria at Leisure Island were also officially opened. 

Addressing the gathering, the Prime Minister highlighted the community’s voluntary support for over 700 days, which played a vital role in transforming the site into a significant development hub within a short period. She credited collaboration among local authorities, youth groups, trade associations, and community members for this success.

“The development of a country is not a task for the government alone,” she stated. “When intellectuals, religious leaders, youth, entrepreneurs, and the public unite with responsible leadership, we can build a resilient nation that withstands external and internal challenges.” 

She further stressed that rural communities, often engaged in demanding and hardworking lives, also deserve the freedom to relax, enjoy, and find peace. 

The Prime Minister reaffirmed the government’s commitment to fostering inclusive spaces where all citizens can live with dignity.
