Former Minister Mahindananda Aluthgamage announced his retirement from active politics today (16), following a sharp decline in voter support in the 2024 General Election.
Running under the New Democratic Front’s ‘gas cylinder’ symbol, he secured just 20,401 votes in the Kandy District, a significant drop from his previous tallies of nearly 200,000 votes.
Reflecting on his 30-year political career and his family’s seven-decade legacy in Nawalapitiya, Aluthgamage stated, “The voters have spoken, and it is clear that my politics is no longer needed.”
