Debate on Parliamentary Pensions (Repeal) Bill to be held today

The debate on the second reading of the Parliamentary Pensions (Repeal) Bill is set to take place today (17) from 11:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., according to the Secretary General’s Office of Parliament.


The second parliamentary week of February will continue until 20th February 2026, with Parliament convening daily from 9:30 a.m. under the chairmanship of Speaker Jagath Wickramaratne. The morning session will include parliamentary business and questions until 11:30 a.m.


In addition to the debate on the Bill to abolish parliamentary pensions, a proposal to appoint a Select Committee to review election-related laws and submit a report, including proposals and recommendations, is scheduled for approval today.


Tomorrow (18), debates will cover three regulations under the Special Commodity Levy Act and two orders under the Motor Traffic Act.


On 19 February 2026, the second reading debates included the Judicature (Amendment) Bill and the Poisons, Opium and Dangerous Drugs (Amendment) Bill.


Finally, on Friday, 20 February, the Opposition's Adjournment Motion titled “Issues Prevailing in the Energy Sector” will be taken up for debate.
