- Notes teachers complaints over issues in newly prepared modules for several subjects including the use of QR codes
In the wake of the suspension of the newly printed Grade Six English language module over an inappropriate web reference, the Ceylon Teachers’ Union (CTU) stated that certain issues have been identified in other newly prepared modules and hence called on the National Institute of Education (NIE) to conduct a comprehensive review before they are distributed to students.
Speaking to The Daily Morning, the CTU President, Priyantha Fernando said that teachers have complained of problems in several subjects, pointing in particular to the use of quick response (QR) codes included in the lessons. He added that when some of these QR codes are scanned, they direct users to irrelevant or unnecessary content.
“These modules are problematic. If they are distributed among students and implemented without proper checks, it could lead to further complications in classrooms. The NIE should review all modules thoroughly before they are released. We don’t recommend the Education Ministry distributing them among students from 5 January of this year (2026) as planned," he said.
Ministry Secretary Nalaka Kaluwewa was not available for comment.
The Ministry earlier announced the distribution of a newly printed Grade Six English language module, prepared as part of ongoing education reforms, had been suspended with immediate effect after it was confirmed that it contained a reference to an inappropriate website. An investigation was launched following a complaint, and the Ministry also lodged a complaint with the Criminal Investigation Department regarding the matter.
