28 Dec 2022

A tree-planting project was launched in the Mandaramnuwara Police area under the patronage of Inspector General of Police (IGP) Chandana D. Wickramaratne recently.

Under this project, more than 1,200 plants, including species such as kumbuk, na, and jackfruit given by the Police were planted on both sides of the Elamale-Karambagala Road.

The students of the Karambagala Kanishta Vidyalaya have been entrusted with taking care of 75 plants that are to be planted under this programme for a period of one year. Police Media Spokesman, Senior Superintendent of Police and Attorney-at-Law Nihal Thalduwa said that the principal, teaching staff and students of the school had given their fullest support to the programme.

Through this programme, he said that the Police hope to create an interest in the environment among schoolchildren. He said that students can be made aware of the benefits of taking care of trees. They will also enjoy the future satisfaction of seeing the plants that they have taken care of having grown into large trees.

Thalduwa also said that a businessman from the Mandaramnuwara Police area has come forward to provide books and school items needed for the next year to the students who take care of these plants successfully for a year, and added that the Police Department has planned to launch similar projects in the future, depending on the success of the initial programmes.
