Fruit consumption in Sri Lanka has increased to 12.8 million metric tons in 2023, with banana, mango, pineapple, and papaya production seeing significant growth.

The Department of Agriculture aims to increase production by 2027, with plans for technical measures such as breeding new varieties, high-density cultivation, and integrated pest control.

The Minister of Agriculture and Plantation Industries, Mahinda Amaraweera has instructed farmers to cultivate crops that can be grown locally, including fruits currently imported from abroad.
