Stephen Maheema Fernando is an emerging young artist who recently clinched the all-island winner award in the religious English solo category at the Sri Lanka Festival of Music, showcasing great musical talent at the tender age of five. His achievements extend beyond solo performances, as he also secured a gold medal in the semifinals as part of the under seven English musical songs choir, earning a spot in the finals.
Tell us about yourself.
My name is Stephen Maheema Fernando, and I am a grade one student at Gateway College in Negombo. In my family, it’s my mom, dad, brother, and me, along with our beloved pet fish, whom I care for daily. I am also a student of La Musica Music Academy by teacher Hiruni Perera.
Any hobbies?
I am passionate about music, singing, and dancing. These activities bring immense joy to my life.
What instruments do you play?
I am currently learning to play the organ and honing my singing skills under the guidance of my teacher, Hiruni Perera.
Do you watch any cartoons?
I enjoy watching ‘Ben 10’ in my free time.
What do you do in school?
I participate in sports like swimming and chess, use computers for learning, and delve into various subjects.
Is there any instrument you’d like to learn in the future?
I aspire to learn the guitar in the future.
Tell us about your brother.
My brother, Steve Himalsha Fernando, is 10 years old and studies at St. Thomas International School, Seeduwa. He also attends teacher Hiruni’s class.
What do you want to be when you grow up?
I want to become a dentist.
Any tips for dental care?
1. Limit candy consumption.
2. Brush your teeth morning and night.
3. Rinse your mouth after consuming sweets or chocolate.
How did you feel when you won awards at the Sri Lanka Festival of Music?
I felt incredibly happy and proud. Singing ‘Down by the Riverside’ at the festival brought me immense joy.
Any other activities you enjoy?
I love reading, and my favourite storybook is ‘The Lion King.’
What are your other achievements?
I recently scored 100 marks in IWMS – elementary level.
