Daily searches in prisons for contraband

31 Dec 2025 | BY Dhanushka Dharmapriya

The Prisons Department stated that daily search operations are taking place in every prison across the country to crack down on unauthorised and illicit electronic devices that have been smuggled into prisons.

Speaking to The Daily Morning, the Media Spokesperson of the Department and Prisons Commissioner, Jagath Weerasinghe said that in certain prisons, the search operations are carried out by the Department Units, while in high-security prisons, the Special Task Force also engages in joint operations in order to conduct these operations.

Within the course of this year (2025), 133 mobile phones have been seized during 72 raids at the Boossa High Security Prison, and on 24 December alone, two smart mobile phones, two phone chargers, three data cables, and two hands-free devices were recovered. Consequently, in the recent murder of the manager of the Singer Showroom in Central Ambalangoda, Hiran Kosala, the Police have reported that the recovered missing phone of the victim has revealed contacts with an imprisoned organised crime suspect in Boossa, leading to public concerns being raised about the security deployed for high-security prisons.
