JP posts will no longer be granted on political grounds – Justice Minister

06 Mar 2026 | BY Staff Writer

Minister of Justice and National Integration, Harshana Nanayakkara, announced that the appointment of Justices of the Peace (JPs) will no longer be based on political considerations.

He explained that a new mechanism has been established to handle complaints regarding JPs, and a system is being developed to compile data on all JPs across the country. This database will enable verification of an individual’s status as a Justice of the Peace when certifying documents.

The Minister also revealed that the maximum age limit for JP appointments will now be restricted to 75 years. Future appointments will require individuals to possess the necessary mental and physical capacity to read and understand complex documents.

Additionally, a process to update JP bio-data every two years has been introduced, involving certification through the Grama Niladhari and the Divisional Secretariat. A communication system, including a WhatsApp number, email, and phone line, has been set up for reporting offenses committed by JPs.

While some individuals have served in the role for five to ten years and gained experience, authorities have not yet discussed cancelling previous appointments en masse.

Minister Nanayakkara emphasised that the reforms were decided by a committee that prioritized proper capacity and integrity for future JP appointments, and he sees no justification to alter the age limit currently set at 75.
