SLPP General Secretary, attorney-at-law Sagara Kariyawasam was granted bail by the Kaduwela Magistrate’s Court yesterday (10), hours after he was arrested by the Central Crime Investigation Bureau (CCIB) over alleged threats against Inspector General of Police (IGP) attorney Priyantha Weerasooriya.

Kaduwela Magistrate Aruna Buddhadasa ordered Kariyawasam’s release on two surety bail bonds of Rs. 2 million each and imposed a ban on foreign travel.

Kariyawasam, a former Parliamentarian, was arrested after he arrived at the CCIB yesterday morning to provide a statement regarding remarks he had allegedly made concerning the IGP.

The CCIB had commenced an investigation on the instructions of the IGP into the alleged remarks.

Police alleged that Kariyawasam had made death threats against the IGP and made statements intended to bring President Anura Kumara Dissanayake and the Government into public disrepute.

He was subsequently taken before the Kaduwela Magistrate’s Court, where the Court ordered his release on bail and imposed the travel restriction.

The arrest followed remarks allegedly made by Kariyawasam during a media briefing concerning an alleged attempt to assassinate the IGP in public.
