The Ministry of Health states that one in every three people in Sri Lanka is suffering from high blood pressure.
Director of the Non-Communicable Diseases Unit Dr. Shreeni Alahapperuma noted that illnesses linked to hypertension account for nearly 34 percent of deaths reported in the country.
She urged people, especially those over 35 years of age, to check their blood pressure regularly as the condition often shows no symptoms.
The Health Ministry also identified excessive salt consumption as a major cause of high blood pressure.
