The “Battle of the Golds”, the traditional big match between two leading schools in Matale - St. Thomas' College Matale and Government Science College Matale - has been revived after a lapse of several years. It will be played as a limited overs cricket encounter at the Police Ground in Kandy tomorrow (2 September).
According to past records, the encounter was first played in 1964, with Science College winning the inaugural match under the captaincy of Senarath Siyabalangamuwa.
Since then, the confrontation between the two schools resulted in Thomians leading the series 16 to one, with the rest being drawn games.
This year's match is of special significance to St. Thomas' Matale as the school celebrates its 150th anniversary (1873-2023) this year.
The St. Thomas’ College team will be led by Matheesha Rashmika with Anuradha Ranasinghe as the deputy, while R.U.S. Rajapaksa will lead the Government Science College team with A.I.E. Premasiri as his vice-captain.
