A devastating landslide has been reported from Sarasavigama, Peradeniya, following heavy rains in the area.

Local residents have confirmed that at least twenty-three people have died as a result of the disaster. 

So far, fourteen bodies have been recovered, and search operations for the missing are continuing.

The landslide completely destroyed ten houses in the area. 

Local residents fear that the death toll could still rise as rescue teams work through the debris. 

The incident adds to the rapidly climbing casualty figures across the island from the ongoing severe weather.
