CEB restructuring: SJB criticises Govt. about employee wellbeing

  • Says CEB employees not given concrete vision on prog.

The main Opposition, the Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB), alleged that the Government-led restructuring process of the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) appears to be arbitrary and that no step has been taken to ensure the wellbeing of CEB employees.

SJB Parliamentarian and attorney Ajith P. Perera levelled these allegations while speaking at a press briefing held yesterday (7) in Colombo.

Pointing out the Government’s announcement that the CEB will be restructured into four institutions and that those unwilling to join these institutions have the opportunity to retire with a compensation of up to Rs. 5 million, he claimed: “However, the letter issued to the employees in this regard is incomplete. At the same time, employees’ wellbeing has not been ensured. This letter does not outline a concrete vision about the upcoming programme.”

Moreover, he opined that this restructuring process, which has an impact on the country’s economy, seems to be moving forward without proper leadership. Perera further alleged that in this context, this process seems to be both forced and deviated from the objectives.

In addition, while acknowledging that a restructuring process is beneficial in order to provide better services, he added that it should be systematic.

Attempts to contact the CEB management to discuss CEB employees’ ongoing work-to-rule action were not successful.
