Sri Lanka is unlikely to experience severe impacts from a potential El Niño event, according to Climate Change Secretariat Director Leel Randeni. He noted that the country's island geography, central highlands and the influence of the Indian Ocean help moderate extreme climate effects.
While El Niño could contribute to higher temperatures in early 2027, particularly during February and March, Randeni stated that a significant reduction in rainfall is not expected. However, authorities have stressed the need for preparedness measures, including effective water management and planning for possible agricultural impacts.
