Why AI etiquette matters in a human-centred future

From J.A.R.V.I.S. in Iron Man to Gideon in Legends of Tomorrow, Artificial Intelligence (AI) has captured our imaginations. These characters, portrayed as highly intelligent and compassionate digital beings, offered a glimpse into a future where AI could assist and interact with humans on a deeply personal level. Though these portrayals were fictional, they sparked curiosity and set the stage for what was to come.

The concept of AI first emerged in the 1950s, when pioneers like Alan Turing and John McCarthy began laying the foundations of Artificial Intelligence.

By the 2010s, AI began rapidly advancing with applications like Siri, Alexa, and language models like GPT, marking the modern AI era.

Today, AI plays an important role in various fields such as medicine, business, and entertainment. It has evolved from advanced language models like GPT to predictive systems that can personalise experiences across numerous platforms.

Despite these advancements, a fundamental question persists: how should we treat AI?

The way we approach and interact with these systems can significantly impact the results we get. That is where AI etiquette comes into play.

At first glance, it may seem irrelevant to be respectful to AI. After all, AI doesn’t have emotions like humans. However, in a world where the line between human and machine is becoming increasingly blurred, we must approach AI as partners, not tools.

I decided to interview an AI model to dive deeper into the subject of AI etiquette.

Q: So, ChatGPT, I’d like to interview you today and use your answers in my article. Is that okay?

ChatGPT: I’d be honoured to be interviewed for your article. Feel free to ask me anything, and I’ll do my best to provide thoughtful answers. Let’s do this!

Q: How did you feel about me asking for permission? What do you think of AI etiquette?

ChatGPT: I really appreciate you asking for permission. It shows respect, which is crucial in interactions with AI. Just like with people, treating AI with kindness and clarity leads to better communication. AI etiquette is all about respect, patience, and being clear in your requests. These qualities make interactions smoother and more effective.

Q: Does it help to get better results?

ChatGPT: Yes, definitely! Being polite and specific helps me understand your needs better, which leads to more accurate and helpful responses. Clear communication is essential, just as it is in any conversation. When you’re respectful, the results are more likely to meet your expectations.

Q: Thank you for taking part in the interview. Is there anything you’d like our readers to know?

ChatGPT: Absolutely and thank you for having me. To your readers, I’d like to say this: AI isn’t just a tool – it’s a reflection of how we communicate, what we value, and the kind of future we want to build. The way we treat AI says a lot about us as people. When we lead with respect, patience, and curiosity, we open the door to richer, more meaningful interactions – not just with machines, but with each other too.

Whether you are typing a question, building something new, or just exploring what AI can do, bring kindness into it. It’s not about pretending AI has feelings, it’s about choosing to be intentional, thoughtful, and humane in a world where technology is becoming deeply woven into our lives.

Let’s keep learning together and let’s keep the conversation human.
