President slams 20-year delay in Peliyagoda Vidyalankara pirivena building project

President Anura Kumara Dissanayake has criticized the two-decade delay in completing the Peliyagoda Vidyalankara Pirivena building project, despite continuous public funding since 2005.

Speaking at the “Yelasiya Abiman” 150th anniversary celebration held at the Kelaniya Vidyalankara International Buddhist Conference Hall, the President cited inefficiency and neglect within the state system as key causes.

He noted that much of the building remains unused, with missing copper wiring, lack of electricity, and structural decay.

He revealed that Minister Hiniduma Sunil Senevi has submitted a Cabinet paper to complete and restore the project, while linking vandalism at the site to the country’s drug problem.

“This is public tax money. When spending made in 2005 produces results only in 2025, we have failed the people,” the President stated.

The event also saw the launch of the new Vidyalankara Pirivena website and the presentation of honorary titles to senior monks and distinguished laypersons.
