A protest was held this morning (4) in front of the BYD vehicle showroom in Colombo, demanding the release of electric vehicles currently detained by Sri Lanka Customs.
Protesters claimed that the Customs decision had disrupted vehicle purchases and delivery schedules, urging authorities to resolve the issue immediately.
They alleged that despite being ready to purchase the vehicles, they were unable to do so due to Customs’ detention of BYD imports.
A few months ago, Sri Lanka Customs detained and inspected several BYD vehicles, citing non-compliance with existing import procedures and the rejection of the manufacturer’s certificate.
As a result, the importer, JKCG Auto, faced significant delays in vehicle delivery and later sought court intervention. The court subsequently allowed the release of the vehicles under a bond as a temporary measure.
While legal proceedings remain ongoing, JKCG Auto stated that it looks forward to a swift resolution from Sri Lanka Customs to normalise sales and deliveries.
