39th Battle of the Rocks starts today

The 39th Battle of The Rocks between St. Anne’s College, Kurunegala and Maliyadeva College, Kurunegala will be played today (24) and tomorrow(25) at the Kurunegala Welagedara Stadium.

St. Anne’s College will be led by Kalindu Wijesinghe and Maliyadeva College will be led by Amesh Tennakoon. The Devans lead the tally between the two sides having won it six times while St. Anne’s are yet to taste victory. 


St. Anne’s College


St. Anne’s College, having played in the Division 1 Tier A of the Under-19 Cricket Tournament organised by the Sri Lanka School Cricket Association, won games against Nalanda College, Colombo and Kingswood College, Kandy. 

Skipper Wijesinghe who is a fifth year coloursman, has scored 240 runs and taken over 20 wickets with his right arm leg spinners. Vice captain Manan Musammil has scored more than 300 runs and has 38 wickets with bowling his right-arm off-spinners.

Mahima Kotuwila is the top scorer for St. Anne’s with 625 runs including a century against St. Joseph's Vas College, Wennappuwa.

Left-arm spinner Kevin Nanayakkara stands at the forefront of St. Anne's bowlers. He currently has 56 wickets. In addition, right-arm off-spinner Yasimin Jayasundara has claimed nearly 30 wickets.

The team's head coach is Randira Ranasinghe, who is also a product of St. Anne's College.

Maliyadeva College


Maliyadeva College reached the quarterfinals of the Division I inter-school cricket tournament organised by the Sri Lanka School Cricket Association.

The captain of the team, Amesh Tennakoon, has been doing a great job for the team by scoring over 800 runs and adding five more fifties including 137 scored against Prince of Wales College, Moratuwa.

Gayana Weerasinghe, the team's vice-captain, completed 1000 runs this year. His innings included 149 against Mahinda Vidyalaya Galle, 135 not-out and 120 not-out against Royal College Colombo, and eight other fifties.

Pasindu Menaka is another centurion of the team, who came against Katugastota St. Anthony's College.

The most promising bowler of the team is 15-year-old Dhimath Abeysinghe. He is the leading wicket taker for Maliadeva with 60 wickets so far, including two 10-wicket hauls against Ambalangoda Dharmasoka Vidyalaya and Kelaniya Gurukula Vidyalaya.

Apart from that, fast bowler Gayana Weerasinghe stands out among the bowlers with 26 wickets so far.

The coach of the team is Janaka Seneviratne, who is a former cricketer of St. Mary's College.
