  • Cold winds from India affecting islandwide temperatures

Visitors flock to witness the early morning frost phenomenon. The Department of Meteorology stated that cold weather conditions experienced during the early morning hours are expected to continue until the end of February. According to the Department, the prevailing cold conditions are caused by a cold wind current blowing in from India.

Along with the cold weather, heavy frost-like conditions have been observed in Nuwara Eliya, while cooler-than-usual mornings are being reported in most parts of the island.

Meanwhile, a large number of local and foreign tourists have arrived in Nuwara Eliya during the weekend holidays, amid prevailing cold weather conditions.

It was reported that many visitors travel to the area during these days to witness the early morning appearance of Malthuhina, a frost-like phenomenon observed in the region during periods of extreme cold.

After a lapse of 17 years, a minimum temperature was recorded in Nuwara Eliya on 22 January, according to the Department of Meteorology. The temperature dropped to 3.5 degrees Celsius, marking the lowest temperature recorded in Sri Lanka since 2009.

The lowest minimum temperature recorded in the country yesterday (25) was also reported from Nuwara Eliya, measuring 9.7 degrees Celsius.
