The Government is working toward creating “smart citizens” equipped to meet the challenges of the future, according to Public Administration, Provincial Councils and Local Government Minister Chandana Abeyrathne.
Speaking at the certificate awarding ceremony of the 2026-I batch of young cadets at the National Youth Corps Training Centre in Walahena, the Minister said the government’s new education vision focuses on preparing youth through skills-based and practical learning.
The inaugural batch completed training in Information Technology, English language skills and life development programmes aimed at strengthening both professional and social abilities.
Highlighting the government’s “New Path of Educational Reform,” the Minister announced that students will be given the option to pursue either academic or vocational education streams after the national examination at the end of Grade 9.
He added that funding has already been allocated to establish or upgrade 50 technical colleges across the country.
Addressing broader social concerns, the Minister also emphasized the need for personal responsibility, youth empowerment, and healthy lifestyles.
He encouraged young people to engage in literature, arts, sports and positive activities while urging them to reject drug use and contribute toward creating a healthier and stronger society.
The event was attended by religious leaders, government officials, local representatives and parents.
