A total of 16 major and 10 medium-sized reservoirs managed by the Department of Irrigation are currently spilling water amid ongoing heavy rainfall nationwide, according to Eng. H.M.P.S.D. Herath, Director of Irrigation (Water Management).
Major reservoirs such as Rajanganaya in Anuradhapura, Sorabora Wewa in Badulla, and Weerawila, Lunugamwehera, and Weheragala in Hambantota are among those overflowing.
Spill gates have been opened at several reservoirs, including Rajanganaya and Lunugamwehera, to manage water levels and prevent flooding.
Authorities have advised residents in low-lying areas near these reservoirs to stay vigilant as water levels may fluctuate further with continued rainfall.
