The Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Sri Lanka has expressed concern over the proposed increase in the retirement age of judges, stressing the need to protect judicial independence and separation of powers.

The Conference called for public and stakeholder consultation before proceeding with the proposed constitutional amendment.

It also said any change should strengthen judicial independence, address the shortage of judges and reduce delays in the administration of justice.
