A group of individuals and civil society organisations (CSOs), have, in an open letter to the President and the Prime Minister, noted that Article 12(1) of the Constitution guarantees equal treatment and protection under the law for all citizens, making it the Government's responsibility to ensure the fair implementation of the Muslim Marriage and Divorce Act (MMDA).
They, about 135 individuals and 18 CSOs, have pointed out that shifting this responsibility to religious leaders constitutes a neglect of governmental duties.
“The MMDA, which upholds patriarchal structures, continues to discriminate against women and girls, with the male-only Quazi Courts system — known for corruption and discriminatory practices — directly violating Article 12. Furthermore, the Quazi system is funded by taxpayers' money, making it the Government's responsibility to address these issues,” the letter read.
