Korea and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDPhave unveiled a $4.7 million, three-year project to enhance municipal waste management in Sri Lanka, focusing on low-carbon and climate-resilient solutions.
Funded by Korea’s Ministry of Climate, Energy and Environment, the initiative aims to reduce over 269,000 tons of CO₂ emissions by deploying technologies like anaerobic digestion, pyrolysis, and vermicomposting in pilot sites in Gampola and Balangoda.
The project will also expand strategic waste planning across four provinces, promoting green funding, digital tools, and gender inclusion.
With Sri Lanka generating over 10,000 tons of waste daily, this effort seeks to close systemic gaps and support the country’s climate commitments.
