A key discussion was recently held at the Sports Ministry between Sports Minister Sunil Kumara Gamage and representatives from four major aquatic sports federations – Canoeing and Kayaking, Rowing, Sailing, and Surfing – to lay the foundation for the establishment of a National Water Sports Centre.
The federations highlighted the importance of this proposed facility in enhancing training, athlete development, and raising Sri Lanka’s profile in international competitions.
The establishment of the National Water Sports Centre marks a historic milestone, as it will be the first dedicated facility for aquatic sports in the country.
It aims to support local athletes and strengthen infrastructure for competitive water sports nationwide.
The Sports Minister also reaffirmed the Government’s commitment to fostering aquatic sports and ensuring Sri Lanka remains competitive in global tournaments.
The meeting was attended by Department of Sports Director General Shemal Fernando.
