SJB faces internal rift over Local Government appointments

25 May 2025 | BY Staff Writer

The Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) is facing internal turmoil as multiple electoral organisers have resigned over disagreements regarding the appointment of members to Local Government (LG) bodies.

Organisers from key electorates, including MPs and district coordinators, stepped down after the party leadership declined to accept their proposed candidates for LG positions. Among those who have resigned are MP Chaminda Wijesiri (Bandarawela), Ranjith Aluwihare (Rattota), and Bandula Lal Bandarigoda (Galle).

They have formally submitted their resignations to SJB Leader Sajith Premadasa and General Secretary Ranjith Madduma Bandara.

According to party sources, several other organisers are under similar pressure and may also reconsider their positions soon.

General Secretary Ranjith Madduma Bandara responded to the crisis, emphasising that all members must act in line with the party's regulations and decisions.
