  • Chairperson says official data shows no rise in illicit alcohol use

The National Authority on Tobacco and Alcohol (NATA) is set to launch a special programme to raise awareness about illicit alcohol and address misconceptions surrounding its use.

Speaking to The Daily Morning, NATA Chairperson Dr. Ananda Rathnayake said that rumours about illicit liquor are spreading in the country, and the programme aims to provide accurate information to the public.

He confirmed that, according to official statistics, there has been no rise in the use of illicit liquor, contrary to media reports citing World Health Organisation data. “No such statistics have been issued. The media reports suggesting a significant rise are inaccurate,” he said.

Referring to the recent incident in Waikkala, Wennappuwa, where seven individuals allegedly died and eight others received treatment at the District General Hospital in Negombo after suspected consumption of illicit liquor, Dr. Rathnayaka described it as an isolated case. “What actually happened has not yet been confirmed,” he added.

Following the incident, police have expanded operations targeting illicit liquor, which prompted media reports claiming a surge in its consumption.
