CR, Kandy, CH and Havies pursue cup glory

  • Defence teams’ gun for plate honours


Table leaders CR and FC, defending champions Kandy SC, CH and FC and Havelocks SC qualified to compete in the Cup segment of the super-round of the ongoing Maliban Inter-Club League Rugby Tournament which saw the first round ending last week.

The former champions who had a fallow week concluded the first round with 42 total points having scored 50 tries.

Title-holders Kandy SC settled for second place with one total point less than the red shirts but having had the consolation of scoring the highest number of tries (60) among all the nine teams.

The super-round of the Cup segment will see the cream of the teams in the domestic rugby arena facing each other over a three-week duration.

Afterwards the top two teams in the points table will advance to a winner takes all grand finale in a format change introduced before the kick off of the League late last year.

Meanwhile, the services teams including Air Force, Police, Army and Navy are set to battle it out for the Plate honours during the same period with there also being another grand finale to decide the overall winner of the segment between the top two ranked sides at the conclusion of the second round.

Siri Lions saw themselves being eliminated after failing to win a single game at the competition of the first round.
