The main Opposition, the Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) urged the Government to take steps to immediately hold the Provincial Council (PC) Elections, adding that the Government should pay attention to addressing the issues surrounding the delimitation process.

This was discussed by the Dehiwala-Mount Lavinia Municipal Councillor Dr. Chamal Sanjeewa during a press briefing held yesterday (15) in Colombo. 

“There is no obstacle for the Government to swiftly resolve the existing issues pertaining to the delimitation process, address the existing flaws in that regard, and present a bill to the Parliament and pass a new act (regarding the same). Another option is that the Government can hold the PC Elections under the old system.”

Dr. Sanjeewa opined that the PC Elections would also be an opportunity for the Government to assess its performance so far. Claiming that international level suggestions have been put forward to the Government regarding holding the PC Elections, he opined that if the Government is using the issues concerning the delimitation process to ignore those suggestions, it is a clear indication that the Government is reluctant to conduct the PC Elections.
