Avant-Garde generated more revenue than Navy: Senadhipathi

03 Jun 2020

Denying allegations that Avant-Garde caused losses to the government, Avant-Garde Security Services Chairman Maj. (Retd.) Nissanka Senadhipathi today claimed that his business generated more income than the Navy could have possibly done. Senadhipathi provided evidence for the third day today (3) before the Presidential Commission of Inquiry (PCoI) probing incidents of political victimization under the ‘Yahapalana regime’. Senadhipathi speaking to reporters today said that he had submitted written evidence to prove that the Navy was generating far less revenue than Avant-Garde. "Former Navy Commander Admiral Ravindra (Ravi) Wijegunaratne in a statement provided to the 2015 -2019  Presidential Commission states that the Navy generated only Rs. 1,721 million for 3 years." He said this figure was much lower than what Avant-Garde generated during its time of operation. "We have been accused of causing losses amounting to Rs. 11.7 billion to the government. We generated Rs. 11.7 billion and this is much more higher than what the Navy generated." He called on former MP Arjuna Ranatunga to prove how the Navy lost money when Avant-Garde took over the business. Ranatunga is one of the MPs who stand accused by Senadhipathi  for conspiring to shut down Avant-Garde and attempting to create a negative depiction of current President Gotabaya Rajapaksa. Speaking further Senadhipathi noted that he had also provided written evidence to prove that a discussion with the Navy had taken place before the floating Armoury business was handed over to Avant-Garde. "I have submitted a copy of the minutes of the meeting that took place on the 23rd of September 2012 with Navy Commander at the Naval Headquarters (NHQ) Fort." According to Senadhipathi the minutes of the meeting state that the Commander of the Navy had acknowledged that certain irregular activities were taking place in its floating armoury business. Senadhipathi said in order to rectify the above issues the floating armoury business was handed over to Avant-Garde.
