AZ, Pfizer, Sinopharm and Sputnik V equally effective during Delta dominance: Study

26 Aug 2021

The results of the first study to compare the efficacy of the Astra-Zeneca, Pfizer, Sinopharm and Sputnik V anti Covid-19 vaccines have shown that the four vaccines were effective in reducing infections, hospitalizations, ICU admissions and deaths in vaccinated compared to unvaccinated individuals, prior to, and during the period when the Delta  variant became dominant in Bahrain, the country in which the study was conducted.  In a series of tweets referring to the findings of the study, University of Sri Jayewardenepura (USJ) Faculty of Medical Sciences Head of the Department of Immunology and Molecular Medicine Prof. Neelika Malavige expressed the following:
  1. In the <50 years category, the percentage death among unvaccinated people was 8.1-fold higher compared to Sinopharm vaccine recipients.
  2. No deaths were recorded in the <50 age group when given Astra-Zeneca, Pfizer and Sputnik V
  3. The percent of deaths among all COVID-19 cases in unvaccinated people >50 years of age was 3.8-fold higher compared to the Sinopharm.
  4. The percentage of deaths among all PCR positive post-vaccination COVID-19 cases among recipients of the Sinopharm vaccine was 0.46% (i.e, 112 deaths) versus 0.15% for Pfizer/BioNtech (i.e., 3 deaths) and 0.03% for AZ/Covishield (1 death).
