31 May 2022

  • Responds to media reports of alleged move to remove veteran banker
BY Dinitha Rathnayake  The Ceylon Bank Employees’ Union (CBEU) warned that it would take action against any plans to remove the General Manager (GM) of the Bank of Ceylon (BOC), veteran banker K.E.D. Sumanasiri. CBEU representative Jayalal Sudesh, speaking to The Morning, said that so far, they have not received any information about his removal as had been reported in the media. “He was not appointed under any political influence and he assumed duties as the General Manager for his education and service. We would object to his removal at any cost.”  However, it is said that such action will be taken based on a number of complaints received against him. Sumanasiri assumed duties as the General Manager of the BOC in 2021 and he succeeded D.P.K. Gunasekera, who retired after a 41-year career at the BOC. Sumanasiri, who joined the Bank in 1990, rose up in the different grades as a career banker and has been a Deputy General Manager  and member of the Bank’s corporate management team since 2013. Over the years, he has taken on many roles, such as Area Manager, Operations Manager, and Assistant General Manager. Sumanasiri is a faculty member of the Bank’s training institute.
