04 Apr 2021

The Bar Association of Sri Lanka (BASL) will express its views and give its input in terms of all legislation which needs to be reformed, the newly inducted BASL President Saliya Pieris (PC) said. Speaking to The Sunday Morning, he said that BASL members have already been assigned to various committees appointed by the Justice Ministry. “We will give our input on all laws. The BASL will give its views and input on whatever legislation that comes up and whatever legislation that needs to be reformed,” he said. He added that the main focus of the BASL would be on the rule of law, the independence of the judiciary, the protection of fundamental rights as well as ensuring the professional development of the junior members of the profession, and the welfare of the members of the Bar.  Enumerating on proposed plans, he said that they have given thought to enhancing the legal education programmes of the BASL and that they are attempting to commence a benevolent fund for the BASL. “In case of an emergency, where members are in urgent need, the BASL can address those issues with the help of this proposed fund. We are looking at how the BASL can help, if and when our members become terminally ill or die at a young age,” he said.
