Beauty industry fading away

26 Sep 2022

By Dinitha Rathnayake   Beauticians’ Association of Sri Lanka Secretary Jeyalukshmi Purushothman claimed that the beauty industry of Sri Lanka is soon to collapse. Speaking to The Morning, Purushothman said that business has gone down by 50%, and customers are losing interest in visiting saloons. “People are losing interest in their regular maintenance, and especially among the young generation, there is a growing trend of working online from home, and they don't wish to pay for our services.” According to Purushothman, they had to increase the prices of their services by 20%, and the new customers are not willing to accept that price. “We have to increase our prices due to the increase of product prices and customers are bargaining with us. I will also try to shift to another industry to keep myself busy, and I'm losing hope in the beauty industry,” she added. She also said that most students in the industry are also planning to go abroad after learning. The beauty industry, which includes cosmetic sales, salons, and spas, is at risk due to the ongoing import restrictions. The industry is currently running out of stocks as well as business. A list of 367 items were dubbed “non-essential” by the Government, including milk and dairy products, fruits, furniture, cosmetics, wine, footwear, and fish, leading to the imposition of import restrictions on them in a bid to maintain foreign exchange reserves. The import of these items are thus barred to those without a valid licence. These import controls were imposed by a gazette notification dated 9 March 2022.
