Rotaract Sustainability Leadership Forum

In September 2015, we witnessed the adoption of 17 Sustainable Development Goals that signalled a universal call to end poverty, safeguard the environment, and ensure that every person participates in and benefits from sustainable action.
As the world celebrates the third anniversary of this landmark occasion and the launch of Youth 2030: The UN Youth Strategy by the United Nations Secretary General, Rotaract Sri Lanka and Maldives in collaboration with Rotaract South Asia MDIO launches the inaugural Rotaract Sustainability Leadership Forum with the intention of promoting the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

Rotaract is a worldwide movement for young men and women between the ages of 18 and 30. The organisation has expanded its borders to cover the entirety of Sri Lanka and its inclusiveness and unique collaborative nature contributes to its growing success. Rotaract’s diversity owes itself to the engagement of different types of Rotaract clubs together across a shared platform – be it from community, institute, or corporate backgrounds.

2016 saw the introduction of the 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda into Rotaract under the theme of “Vision to Action”. The notable efforts were continued under the 2017/18 theme of “Engage Rotaract, Redefine Friendship”. Two years and over 4,000 sustainable social action projects later, Rotaract marks 2018 as the year which launches the novel concept of sustainability leadership among regional youth in order to help strengthen their initiatives.

This year, the Rotaract movement aligns its activities with the theme for the year, “Inspire the Future”, which in turn draws influence from the Rotary theme “Be the Inspiration”. The goal of this is to facilitate empowered engagement of youth in socioeconomic, political, and cultural spheres, ultimately giving rise to strategic sustainability leadership among the youth.

The Rotaract Sustainability Leadership Forum will take place from 13 to 15 December in Colombo, Sri Lanka. It will be graced by several esteemed speakers from both governance and business sectors who are experts on the subjects of sustainability leadership and development.

The convention will bring together over one hundred local and international youth change-makers who have been focusing their efforts on regional sustainable initiatives. They will receive valuable insight on ways to develop tangible solutions for current global sustainability challenges and spearhead positive change in the world.

The participants of this conference will acquire practical knowledge on developing a strategic vision, pragmatic planning, and dynamic implementation; all skills required to guide sustainable change in society.

The programme will also encourage youth collaboration across borders and the exchange of original ideas and strategies. Rotaractors will also receive the privilege of widening their perspectives and drawing inspiration from other’s experiences which will in turn impact their own initiatives of social change for the better.

The forum promises to deliver innovative and pragmatic discussions on mechanisms for sustainable global development. It will open a dialogue for impactful and viable social action and give individuals the tools they require to affect that change. Rotaract Sri Lanka and Maldives hopes their undertaking will mark this year as being one of unmistakable change, innovation, and inspiration.
